If you’re planning on building a nuclear bomb, critical mass is important. It’s the minimal amount needed of a fissile material in order to seriously blow some shit up. And boy, does Sonic Fusion’s newest distortion pedal blow shit up. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days, TheToneKing.com caught up with our old friends at Sonic Fusion to see how much damage we could cause with their Critical Mass distortion.

Handmade, hand-wired, hand-everything(ed) pedals out of Philadelphia, PA. That’s what Sonic Fusion gives to players. And people are responding. Maybe it’s their unique take on classic sounds, or maybe it’s because you can drop these boutique pedals off of a 6-foot stage and they will be just dandy. Either way, players are digging them and that’s why they’re still rolling strong.

And then, then they come up with this guy—the Critical Mass distortion.

Inspired by the Run Off Groove “Big Daddy” circuit, the Critical Mass distortion pedal is a high gain distortion with a unique circuit and a three band tone stack—specifically designed to be articulate and deliver a wide range of versatile tones. The goal was to use a LM386 power amp IC in place of a more standard op amp. The result is a smooth, semitransparent high gain pedal with a unique circuit.

IMG_7063If you’re looking for a pedal that’s going to sound like a monster stack when it’s plugged into the front of a clean amp, then the Critical Mass is the way to go. You wanna talk about a pedal designed to get the best out of 80s riffs chalked full of power chords? This is it.

Every component in Sonic Fusion pedals are carefully placed and thought out for low noise and the best response. On top of calculating all proper shelving frequencies and properly overlapping tone-shaping curves for a gapless signal, all of Sonic Fusion’s FR4 dual-clad, US military spec’d PCBs contain dual ground planes.

It’s all very scientific.

In other words, the Critical Mass can kick ass while not sounding like you’re playing guitar underneath a 747 during takeoff.

In addition to the superior build quality of Sonic Fusion pedals, they also have other exclusive features; like the ability to change the LED color dip switch and the intensity trim pot.

Although we’re just getting started with 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015, Sonic Fusion’s Critical Mass has already upped the watermark for quality and tone. Built like a tank with tone that will kick your ass, nothing says rock like Critical Mass!

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
