DiMarzio Super Distortion: Over 40 Years of Brutality

Perfect Kick ar$ Pickup for Hard Rock/HM.

Great upgrade for any rocker.

Rip, Shred and Scream!!!

Oh, My! POWER AND AGGRESSION!

These are just a few of the customer reviews for the DiMarzio Super Distortion Pickup on Musicians Friend.com. What do we know about it? It is a highly sought after pickup with Hot output, and mid-boost. Rockers and Metalheads can rip the same Ceramic magnets and still produce boss tones. Not to mention, the Super Distortion can make the aesthetics of a guitar pop with it’s cream, white, or if you want to get even funkier, blue, pink, red, green or purple.

In 1972, DiMarzio put out the S.D. pickup.

This pickup started a sound revolution. Replacement pickups simply didn’t exist before the invention of the Super Distortion® in the early Seventies  – dimarzio.com

images-1Who plays them? Eh… Just a few guys who know a thing or two. Ace Freely, Earl Slick, Max Cavelara, Dave Murry, and Adrian Smith to name a few. While all companies boast that they can make pickups that will sing like Freddy Murcury (whom we all love and miss), the Super Distortion screams like Dani Filth (say what you will about the band, the dude can scream).

Wrap some copper around a fridge magnet and call it a pickup if you want, but this is where the professionals are and if you would like to come close to their level, it will only cost you $64.95 on Musician’s friend. DiMarzio has many other fine products, but the Super Distortion is the one that many metal heads have agreed on.

Steve Vai uses The Breed™ in his Ibanez Jems, which is just one of those smooth “Freddy” sounds I told you about. Tosin Abasi rocks the Ionizer 8™ and Paul Gilbert loves the Injector™ in his bridge. Both are still very superb pickups for maniacal guitar players, but all from completely different worlds. And if you want to live there, those are the pickups you should look for. But if you’re looking for the dark side of tone, we prefer to bluster with vehemence with the Super Distortion.

While doing my typical homework I found the video above. What you see is a full-grown man, rocking a Hello Kitty Squire guitar, equipped with a DiMarzio Super Distortion humbucker. I felt this is the perfect video to show how truly badass this product is. You can hear the snap of the pick with every swipe of the higher strings and the trudge (or crunch for the lighter dirt-pedal folk) not only keeps the integrity of each individual string, it possess them into doing the bidding of who-do-tha-voodoo. And if this single pickup can make Hello Kitty even remotely evil, just imagine what it can do for your top of the line Les Paul.

What’s your ultimate metal pickup?

About the Author: Started playing bass at 15. It was Danko Jones who inspired me to play at all, and in a small town I couldn't be picky on what I can get my hands on, so I bought a squire with pride. Obtained a B.C. Rich guitar months later. Moved to the city at 17. At 19 joined my first metal band as a bassist which ended at 20. Joined a bass heavy rock band, which I loved being in whole heartily. I now wait to venture into a new project. For the time being though, I am exploring my abilities as a writer.
