Sometimes we here at TheToneKing.com wonder some manufacturer is going to get the idea to build an overdrive pedal that can also cook stir-fry. Don’t get me wrong, we freaking love us some stir-fry, but usually when manufacturers try to put too many features in their pedals, they really don’t do any of them well.

Bucking the trend, Vein-Tap Pedals had one thing in mind when they created the Little Horn Guitar Boost, make it simple and make it good. Even in the way of graphics, there’s not much going on. But looks can be deceiving. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, TheToneKing.com took a look at the Vein-Tap Little Horn Guitar Boost to hear what pure tone sounds like.

“Your tone – but better!” Vein-Tap exclaims about this little boost pedal. One would think that since The Little Horn looks so basic, it could easily be lost sitting among the more eccentric looking pedals out there. But, like a businessman at a Marilyn Manson show, that’s why The Little Horn sticks out. And, I’ll tell you, The Little Horn definitely means business.

Someone might ask if The Little Horn is a pre-amp boost or a power amp boost. Well, that’s up to you. Putting The Little Horn in the front end of your amp will drive the pre-amp tubes, giving you some killer overdriven tones. Putting it in the FX loop will give you a clean boost, making you louder without added distortion.

With +24dB available, The Little Horn has plenty of room to move. Whether it’s a subtle nudge or a full on kick to the nuts, this pedal’s got it. Solid analog circuitry makes sure that even when this pedal’s cranked your tone remains intact. Due to the insanely high input impedance, over 5MΩ, The Little Horn will add clarity to your tone and can be used to simple create a different tonal dimension to an otherwise dull sound.

True bypass, because…well, that whole ‘Your tone- but better!’ thing. Remember? If you like playing with a room full of knobs, go elsewhere. With the Little Horn, you get one knob to adjust the amount of boost and that’s it. So you better know how to use it. You know how to use your knob? Don’t you?

If you’re looking for a boost pedal that can deep fry a turkey, you’re probably looking in the wrong place with the Vein-Tap Little Horn. Sometimes, you’ll want a pedal that does a bunch of crazy shit, and sometimes manufacturers use all of these extra bells and whistles to cover up what was a crap tone to begin with. Regardless, for players looking for a great-sounding boost without all of the bling bling, they may want to give Vein-Tap’s Little Horn a try. We here at TheToneKing.com did for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, and we learned that sometimes the best pedals are the ones that do one thing right.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
