Anybody that bitches that an Auto Wah ain’t a real Wah is completely missing the point. Sure, the Auto Wah is a different animal than a conventional Wah, but that’s what makes them so cool. ModTone thinks it has an Auto Wah that’s going to make believers out of those skeptics. Lucky for us here at TheToneKing.com, the dudes at ModTone were cool enough to let us check one of them out for 30 Pedals in 30 Days.

First, let’s look at why the skeptics are always going “Wah wah” about their Wah Wahs.

Here’s the argument I usually hear:

Years ago, there was this dude named Jimi Hendrix. Maybe you’ve heard of him. What he did… Wait, listen… He revolutionized the sound of rock with his Wah sounds, man. And, he didn’t use any damn auto wah!

To the $10 dollar-coffee drinking skeptics, the only way to be revolutionary is to do the exact same thing that some other dude did over 50 years ago and every other dude has been doing ever since.

Yeah. That’s really revolutionary.

Revolutionary is looking at things from a different angle. If you treat an Auto Wah as a manual wah, then you’re not going to be happy. But, if you look at it as something that’s going to give you a new dimension of sound, then, you’re in for a good time.

ModTone’s Auto Wah offers you options that a manual Wah can’t. First, the Wah can be activated by how hard you pick. If you pick hard, the pedal recognizes it and will activate. Then, if you soften your attack, the pedal will disengage. What this means is that you can engage or disengage the Wah sound with more ease and consistency than you can with a manual Wah. Instead of choosing sections of songs to have Wah, you’re choosing individual notes.

This option also works with your volume know as well. Roll the volume back for a straight ahead sound. Slap your knob to 10, and you’re in Wah heaven.

The articulation is different than a manual Wah, too. Each note gets it’s own Wah sound, no matter how fast you pick. You’re not limited by how fast you can move your foot. Unless you’re Kevin Bacon or John Travolta, chances are you’re not going to be able to Footloose or Greased Lightning fast enough to get a Wah sound around every note that you’re playing.

ModTone pedals are easy to figure out, and the Auto Wah is no exception. It has one toggle and one knob. If that’s too complicated for you to figure out, you might want to consider a career in politics. The single knob acts adjusts the Threshold of the pedal. Remember when I was talking about how the Auto Wah can sense how hard you’re hitting your strings or what your volume level is? Those parameters are set by the Threshold knob.

ModTone doesn’t hate your manual Wah pedals. Hell, they make some of their own. They are just looking for different sounds, sounds you can’t get from a manual Wah. If you want to be revolutionary, sometimes you have to ignore the skeptics and check out stuff for yourself. Which is exactly what we do here at TheToneKing.com. When we tried ModTone’s Auto Wah for 30 Pedals in 30 Days, we could tell they weren’t trying to reinvent the wheel. They’re just pimping out the ride.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
