We here at TheToneKing.com first covered P.o.B. back in 2013, and we were impressed with what we saw with their Mighty Tiny Fuzz (M.T.F). Which is why we were surprised that they decided to build a second version. But, hell. We’re always up for checking out gear from this up and coming boutique pedal manufacturer. Then we thought, “While we’re at it, we should give another one of their pedals a spin.” For 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015, we took look at the M.T.F. version 2 and the Caffeine Bass Driver.

If memory serves, the O.G. M.T.F. had growl and bite but was tighter than a gold metal-flake Monte Carlo with hydraulics and over-sized rims. And, boy that shit is tight! Version 2.0 goes the extra mile from the original, though, and incorporates a voicing switch that switches between LED clipping and silicon clipping. The Light Emitting Diode (LED) provides a bit of a softer clip than the silicon. If you’re looking for a bit of pillow action, go for LED. If you’re looking for something that’s going to make your short hairs stand on end, check out the silicon.

While M.T.F. V1 used one NPN transistor, Version 2 uses NPN cascading into a PNP capturing more saturated, gated fuzz tones as well a broader harmonic response. I could also tell you that this pedal is made from quality ingredients (like yo momma’s meatballs) but you already knew that, didn’t you? Just in case you’re doubting me, the M.T.F Version 2 has Switchcraft Jacks, Teflon wiring, silver solder, and Alpha switches and potentiometers.

For those looking for a little bass for you face, the Caffeine Bass Driver is on the case. The newest member of the P.o.B. family, this pedal is specially groomed to respond to the low end attack and resonance of the four-stringed instrument. Of course, the Caffeine Bass Driver can be used by both bassists and guitar players.

Guitarists! Just because this pedal’s built for bass, doesn’t mean it’s not going to rock your world when you put your plug in it.

Probably one of the most dynamic bass drivers we’ve ever played, the pedal dons a 5 position switch that enables players to select different clipping variations—from germanium to silicon and everything in between, either symmetrical or asymmetrical. Controls include volume, gain, blend, and presence, but the pièce de résistance is the low frequency cut that enables players to completely cut anything below 150 Hz, opening a whole new spectrum of tone. And, yes just like the M.T.F. the Caffeine Bass Driver also comes with true bypass, silver solder, Teflon wiring, Switchcraft jacks, and Alpha pots all wrapped up in a premium aluminum enclosure.

So there you have it. That’s it. You can go home now.

Yeah right!

Every P.o.B. pedal is also fully customizable. Some of the custom options include:

  • Enclosure size and color
  • Style and color of knobs
  • Color and style of the LED
  • Location of the knobs and/or all the Jacks

Oh, and if I didn’t already mention it, P.o.B. is all about keeping it green. That means no freaking batteries. All P.o.B. pedals use standard Boss type 9-volt power supply, and the voltage can be bumped up internally from 9 volts to 12 and 18. They’ve also made it their mission to use nothing but USA parts. They’re not quite there yet, but they’ve made the goal to be 100% USA parts by 2016.

P.o.B. is a pedal manufacturer so good that if they didn’t exist, we would have to invent them. Fully customizable to the player, solidly built, and killer sounding pedals built by hand in Chicago, IL. Killer tone built from the hands of dudes who have the skills, heart, and know-how to give players what they want. As always it’s been an honor to check out P.o.B.’s Mighty Tiny Fuzz Version 2 and their Caffeine Bass Driver for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015. We here at TheToneKing.com can’t wait to see what’s going to come next from P.o.B.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
