New vs. Old – Battle of the Boogies! A TTK Shoot-Out.

Shoot-Out today will be between the BRAND NEW (for 2010) Multi-Watt Dual Rectifier, versus the vintage and long discontinued TremoVerb Dual Rectifier.
Sure, it’s clear that the new Multi-Watt Rectifier is choc-load of features! NO DOUBT! 8 useable modes, 50/100w selectable per channel (no more tube pulling!!), and rectifier select per switch ~ versus~ the 4 model, non multi-watt rectifier.
For me – Vintage mode is KING, and I was thrilled to realize one important fact. The tone is fantastic on both. Mesa Boogie has a long reputation of building fantastic tone machines, and the Multi-Watt picks up where all old Rectifiers leave off. The foundation of the Rectifier tone is intact, and it’s more alive than ever before … so if you’re in the market for a Dual Rectifier – the 100w Multi-Watt will not disappoint. It contains all of the tones the traditional / legacy Rectifiers left behind, plus added features to take the Dual Rec tone through the roof! Enjoy the video, and as always, ROCK ON!

Channel 2 Vintage on the Multi-Watt Dual is probably the best tone i’ve heard come from one of your reviews yet.
*thumbs up*
keep it up, TTK.
hi ttk how are you today? can you do a comparision of the dual rectifier and the “dr boogie” pedal ? cheers !
BTW..you know what would be cool. Use reamping. Have a flashy player record some stuff dry and use that
I would work on your right hand a bit more…your not drawing the tone out the amp. Your hand is not adapting the tone. Resting your palm on the bridge a bit closer will help you control the strings tone.
The old Tremoverb is a very good amplifier, I guess it costs less then the new Dual Rec. The multi-wattage feature is wonderful, but Mesa needs to upgrade that feature so it can go to really low wattage for bedroom volumes.
Both amps rock hard, I can’t really say which one is better.
Well, on my humb le opinion, i like the one underneath, the one with the four mods better, nice clean crunchy tones…
Both really good, but if you’d ask me… i like the beneath one better, more kindda my style
Hi TTK, i just bought a Mesa Dual Rec. off of ebay, but it is missing 3/4 power tubes. I happen to have 2 extra tubes laying around, could i use these and run it off of 2 tubes instead until i get a new set of tubes?
I like the first one !!!!!
wow… BOTH had just a QUALITY tone – just PURE QUALITY. I don’t know if I’m even using the right words, but man… NICE.
That being said, both had REALLY good cleans, which, for some reason, one doesn’t think of ‘clean’ when you think ‘rectifier’(as an amp head, I know a rectifier is a part inside an amp) – with the Tremo-Verb slightly warmer. Like you, I thought ‘Ch. 2 vintage’ on the new one was just SWEEEEET.
EITHER would be a dream amp – but I’d have to go with the new one for versatility, because of the additional modes, NOT because of any tonal superiority. Tone-wise, there wasn’t really enough of a difference, except for abit more warmth on the older model… and of course, this is just based on watching a video over the internet.
This just may be the BEST shootout you’ve ever done. Good job, my friend!

One of the best MESA amp performance reviews EVER. Well done!
You should do a demo of the Mesa Boogie Roadster. :]
well imo, the tremoverb had better clean, but the pushed was better than the blues. the Ch. 2 Vintage was Better, but once you tweeked it, it sounded better. The Ch. 3 Vintage has less punch to it than the Tremoverb. over all kick ass amps. i like how you can tweek the old ones to sound like the new ones. great stuff tk!!
Man, damn it! I just bought a ENGL Powerball II. If I had heard this review prior to purchase, I would have gotten the new MESA.
Shit…
ac to dc recifier both have the bottom end sound. Better in the new one more fuller sound than that old rec tube. Needs a little tweek here and there to be totally versitile. only question do they both have 54 tubes.
Seems the biggest difference is the brightness and articulation (newer amp) verses warmth and smoothness (tremoverb). I’d take either tho! lol Nice review!!!!
Hey TK, great review love both amp but have to give it the old try and true Tremoverb. Just warmer and more tone. Sound quality here is much better than youtube.
Great battle!
Tone King,
Love the Mesa review. I prefer the Mesa tone above all others! Interesting how the Dual Rec Multi-watt kind of picks up where the Tremoverb left off tone wise! Love the reviews! Keep ‘em coming! Don’t forget, please please please see if you can do a side by side with the RM100′s treadplate module vs. this dual rectifier’s red channel. I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d like to hear them side by side.
Dude, they’re Mesa’s… You gotta play friggen’ death metal!
Wheres the Cannibal Corpse!? Wheres the Testament!? OH MY GOD!!!!
Just kidding, it was a good video =P
I preferred the cleans from the 2010 model, it was a little brighter, which I prefer in cleans. The Pushed setting on the 2010 model also sounded more lively. When you got to channel 2 though, the 2010 model started to sound fizzy, and the Trem sounded smoother. It pretty much remained like that the more gain you put on it and when you switched the channels: Fizzy on the 2010, and smooth on the Trem-o-Verb. The trem got quite harsh at the higher gain, but not so bad.
Summary: Trem-o-Verb wins.
Gotta agree with Jeremi, beautiful sounding amp.
Don’t get me wrong, the 2010 model’s a total badass, but the tremoverb sounded a lot more “full” and boomy to me.
The Tremoverb sounded better. Also your demos are getting better.
the tremoverb sounded alot better IMO.
Wow…the sound quality is WAY better than youtube!!! Thanks for posting!
