30 Pedals in 30 Days: The Whole Line of Budda Pedals

This is me reminding you to do that thing where you watch the vids at the bottom and enter our giveaway and stuff!

Usually, we keep it one pedal a day during 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, but today we thought we would do something different. We decided to cover every single pedal that Budda makes! So, today TheToneKing.com is going to check out the OM Overdrive, Samsara Delay, Chakra Compressor, Karma Chorus, and the Zenman Overdrive.

The goal for today was to show how pedals can be used to compliment each other. And, if we were going to pick just one manufacturer, Budda seemed like the way to go. Besides for building some of the most revered boutique amps, Budda has managed to make some killer pedals that are dynamic enough to work well together. Top shelf without all of the hoopla, Budda always opts for quality over quantity, limiting their pedal line to five multi-dynamic pedals.

Let’s start with what we put in front of the amp.

OMOverdrive-largeOM Overdrive

The OM Overdrive pedal is a high-end boutique amp in a pedal. For players looking to drive their front end, this thing will crash right through it like a runaway semi. Enough gain for modern sounds and enough high end to make sure that your solos cut through the mix, The OM Overdrive is the metal maniacs dream.

ZenManOD-largeZenman Overdrive

Where the OM Overdrive is metal mayhem, the Zenman Overdrive/Boost pedal has a wider range of distortion tones from smooth overdrive to all out crunch and grind. If your looking for a certain overdrive sound, the Zenman can probably help you find it. Working well as a front-end driver for your amp or other pedals, the Zenman has a Phat/Vintage switch to change the EQ range. Topping it all is a Boost with its own level control. The boost can be used by itself, or it can be used with the overdrive.

ChakraComp-largeChakra Compressor

For seasoned players, nothing’s going to give you that professional tone more than a good compressor. The Chakra Compressor mimics the optical compressors used in the sixties, using the gain control to increase the glow of the optical circuit to fatten up the sound. Depending on how much squeeze you’re looking for, you can get something open and warm or you dive right in and get a bright articulate attack that will feel like a punch to the throat.

To simulate how it would be in somebody’s rig, we kept all of the overdrive and compression in front of the amp, while putting the chorus and delay in the effects loop.

Ranging from slapback to far out ambience and everything in between, the Samsara Delay and has up to 600 milliseconds of delay in a multitude of voicings. Using the tone control, you can either dial in some of the low-fi sounds of the ‘60s or ‘70s, or you can brighten it up for something more modern.

KarmaChorus-largeKarma Chorus

It says “chorus,” but there’s a lot more going on with The Karma Chorus. Players can dial in between a solid chorus to a vibrato as well as any combination of the two. The chorus is warm but articulate and the vibrato is well rounded. The Karma is just about the classiest chorus that we’ve heard in a long time.

To get the full experience, you’re going to have to check out the vids. It’s impossible to describe what happens when you find a set of pedals that work well together, but these ones do. Whether it’s how the Zenman or the Chakra push the OM, creating a new range of tones that weren’t available with any of them by themselves, or putting the Karma Chorus before the Samsara Delay so that our tone would get extra gooey on the repeats, the Budda line of pedals complement each other in the best way possible. It’s not often that TheToneKing.com will check out multiple pedals on the same day during 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, but we knew that if we were going to do it, we had to do it with a group of pedals that would be able to handle the job. And the entire Budda line of pedals managed to do exactly that.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
