Sweetwater is one of the biggest music retailers in the world. And, as far as online is concerned, there are none greater. So, as you can imagine, they have a pretty good idea what their millions of customers are looking for. And they’ve teamed up with Wampler Pedals to bring to the world an Orange-inspired distortion pedal. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015, we here at had a chance to take the Sweetwater exclusive, Wampler cataPulp distortion pedal a test drive and see if they could deliver on what players are looking for.

Who do you call when you’re one of the biggest music retailers in the world and are looking to build a killer distortion pedal based of off one of the most popular amps in the world? Only one of the biggest and brightest boutique pedal manufacturers out there—Wampler Pedals. Wampler has been producing some of the most consistently killer sounding pedals. While many manufacturers are trying to recreate many classic sounds, Wampler has made them their own.

The sweetness that is the British-made Orange amps has taken the world by storm. Gritty, versatile, and unique, players from Jimmy Page to Jim Root of Slipknot have all added these amps to their rigs. There haven’t been many who have attempted to squeeze those tasty tones into a glass the size of a footpedal. Which is probably why the guys at Sweetwater approached Brian from Wampler to build one. And build one he did.

Enter the cataPulp. A distortion pedal that covers the gamut of tones that you’ll find in the brightly colored amps that inspired it. Acting more like an amp in a box rather than a simple distortion pedal, the gain stage gradually climbs and gets increasingly dirtier after the 12 o’clock setting. Certainly no one trick pony, the cataPulp covers everything from classic rock to downright hammer to the skull and everything in between. Featuring an active 3-band EQ, top mounted jacks, and Wampler’s soft-click electrical relay true bypass switch.

If you’ve always wanted that Orange tone but didn’t feel like buying a new amp, this is definitely the way to go. Of course, because it is a Sweetwater exclusive, you’ll only find this pedal at…well… Sweetwater.

Sweetwater and Wampler make a great team. If there’s anyone who can recognize the vision of a music retailer that keeps in contact with thousands of customers every day, it would be Wampler. We here at had a great time checking out the Sweetwater exclusive Wampler cataPulp distortion pedal for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015. We can’t wait to see what either of these companies come up with next.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
