Germanium and silicone transistors in the same pedal?

This is madness, I tell you!

When TheToneKing.com calls Peter Rudder of VFE Pedals a mad scientist, we’re not joking. If there ever was a man who paid the strictest attention to every single detail in one of his pedals, it’s this man. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days, TheToneKing.com had the chance to test the results of his madness with the VFE Fiery Red Horse Fuzz Pedal.

The VFE Fiery Red Horse Fuzz is a germanium and silicone hybrid fuzz that gives players a broad swath of fuzz tones. For players who know that germanium and silicon transistors both have something going for them or for those who aren’t sure, the Fiery Red Horse has got you covered. Not to mention the tones that you’ll discover blending the two. This pedals is a tweaker’s delight.

Besides for incorporating both germanium and silicone transistors into the same pedal, the Firey Red Horse is probably the most versatile fuzz pedal we’ve ever seen. That probably has something to do with the plethora of knobs, buttons, and switches that pepper the face of this Frankenstein.

A Sustain, Tone, and Level knob will get you started in dialing in your unique tone. The smaller Power and Mid knobs will help shape your tone even further. The Power knob moves between a subtle gnarl to an all out roaring inferno of fuzz. While the Mid knob moves between dark sound of doom and teeth grinding gnarl.

At the top, is a compression knob. Want a buttery, warm fuzz, drop the power and tweak the compression. Something with a little more bite? Crank the power the other way and the Fiery Horse will trample everything in its path.

Players can also starve the Fiery Red Horse of voltage via trip-pot controls in the back of the pedal. For those who haven’t messed with this, starving a pedal of voltage creates a choppy break-up where your licks sound like they are constantly striving to avoid complete obliteration.

Peter Rudder at VFE Pedals has created the ultimate fuzz Frankenstein monster with the Fiery Red Horse Fuzz Pedal. By combining the two things that most manufacturers can’t decide between, he’s opened up a new spectrum of sound that many have ignored. The VFE Fiery Red Horse Fuzz is definitely one of the most versatile fuzzes that we’ve ever played. A great addition to TheToneKing.com’s 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
