Bohemia was a place.

Bohemian is a person.

Most of the time, the two aren’t related.

ModTone Effects has created the Bohemian Overdrive. Why it is called the Bohemian Overdrive? What makes it so awesome? And, what the hell is a Bohemian anyway? These questions and more will soon be answered in today’s edition of 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, right here on TheToneKing.com!

If you’re strolling down the street and someone points their finger at you and screams out, “You’re a Bohemian!” they’re saying one of two things:

1: “Dude! You’re totally a resident from a historical country that, at the end of World War I, coalesced with several other neighboring countries to make up the modern day Czech Republic!”

2: “Dude! You totally practice an unconventional lifestyle that’s most closely associated with spirited artistic pursuits in painting, music, and literature!”

Etymology is important.

When ModTone created the Bohemian Overdrive Pedal, chances are they had the latter definition in mind. Inspired by the entire history of British amplifier design, the Bohemian Overdrive produces a whole spectrum of sound from a bit o grit to a medium classic UK saturation. With its hard-hitting mids and tight break up, recreating the sounds used by Zeppelin and Cream is a snap for the MT-BD.

Volume, Drive, and Tone knobs make dialing in a killer classic tone simple. And, a +/- gives players an extra boost for more hard hitting sounds like AC/DC, Deep Purple, or even more modern bands like The Strokes or Kings of Leon. Keep it in “ – “ territory if you’re looking for gain as tight as your high school football uniform. But, if your looking for a something a little more gnarly, flip the switch to “+.” True bypass circuitry, of course, but the Bohemian Overdrive also works perfectly with ModTone’s Atom Power Supply – Way more convenient than a wall wart adapter! – Plus, it gives players the option of daisy chaining up to eight pedals with an 8-port expansion cable.

ModTone probably was giving a slight nod to Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody when they named this pedal. And the nod is clear when you start trying to recreate some of Brian May’s signature sounds. Besides for recreating the tones of its namesake, the MT-BD can help create solo sounds from songs like Love of My Life and We Will Rock You.

In modern vernacular, Bohemian refers to someone who lives a life that is focused on artistic expression. It’s no wonder that ModTone would give that title to one of its most expressive pedals. Checking out ModTone’s Bohemian Overdrive for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014 definitely helped satisfy our own Bohemian side here at TheToneKing.com.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
