In my early playing days, when the variety of pedals available locally was fairly limited, I never wondered how a bunch of pedals that looked exactly the same could create such shockingly different effects.  All I knew was that, in most cases, chorus pedals were one color, distortions another, delays another still, and that was about it.  I never gave a thought to exactly what was going on under the hood.

Now, by some accounts, there are 3,000 pedal manufacturers out there.  Some of them are creating the same classic effects they’ve been building for decades, others are offering new, modern twists on tried-and-true designs, and others still are putting things out there are completely out in left field.  With the gear market offering so many options, players have become more interested in what makes their favorite effects tick (or growl, or explode, or shimmer).

Fortunately, for those who want to attain greater levels of knowledge about how pedals work, and may even want to groom a future career for themselves in the pedal industry, ModKits DIY offers a huge range of build-it-yourself pedal kits for a range of interests and skill levels.  And for the 2014 installment of TheToneKing.com’s 30 Pedals in 30 Days extravaganza, I was given the mission of assembling and auditioning the Wahtz Wah.

No mere copy, the Waltz Wah is a ModKits original design that offers a growling, fat, vocal wah effect that gives anything out there a run for it’s money.  And even though it’s rated as a more advanced build by ModKits, a person with merely average soldering and assembly skills (like yours truly) can get the Waltz Wah up and running within a few hours.

Though ModKits’ design is a worthy contender among all of the wah-ptions (rimshot!) out there, they’re truly committed to helping player find his own voice the vast world of guitar effects and tweak the ModKits design to his liking, if so desired.  “Obviously, the world is your oyster [when it comes to] changing parts.  It just depends on what you’re looking for and finding what you want to do…and change things out,”* said Gale Estrada, a Sales Representative from ModKits DIY, at NAMM 2014.

Knowing how your pedals are built and what’s inside is a great bit of knowledge for any player to add to his arsenal, and the best way to accomplish that is to actually get your hands (and kitchen table, in my case) a little bit dirty and dig in.  Then, once all that fancy electrical engineering learnin’ you do from putting it together is done,  you can really get dirty with the fat, sexy funk that the Wahtz Wah will deliver to your rig.
