We’ve been trampled by The Hoof.

Got stomped and scythed by The Hoof Reaper.

Now for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, TheToneKing.com is ready to be mauled by Earthquaker Devices’ Cloven Hoof Fuzz!

While there’s speculation on how some animals evolved a solid hoof while other evolved hooves that were cloven, the evolution from the original Earthquaker Hoof Fuzz pedal to The Cloven Hoof is much clearer.

The germanium transistors of The Hoof gave players a dynamic fuzz with clarity and range. Rich in harmonics with just the right amount of grit. The Hoof was a big hit for Earthquaker. But for some, it didn’t go far enough. Enter, The Cloven Hoof.

The Cloven Hoof retains the clarity and the range of dirt tones as its ancestor but incorporates four specially selected silicone transistors in place of germanium. The silicone provides higher gains, cleaner cleans, and improved temperature stability. With a wider range than The Hoof, The Cloven Hoof should satisfy anyone interested in going full BOAR with their fuzz. (Hahahah! Get it!?)

The Cloven Hoof claims four times the range of The Hoof.

Both pieces have Tone, Shift, Level, and Fuzz controls, but the Cloven Hoof’s controls have been modified to accommodate for more fuzz and tighter control over the new silicon transistors. The Shift still acts as a boost or a cut to the mids, and the Level has output to spare.

And, just like every other Earthquaker pedal, The Cloven Hoof is manufactured in Akron, Ohio.

During my first interview with Earthquaker Founder Jaime Stillman, I was impressed by how much attention he pays to how his employees are treated.

“As for our wonderful employees, we pay them all pretty well and even give them full coverage health/dental/life insurance so the don’t rise up and revolt. If they did, we could just remove their batteries so I guess it wouldn’t be a big deal.”

Rather than revolting, the crew at Earthquaker Devices have consistently managed to build top notch pedals. From the looks of it, if you take care of your employees, they’ll take care of you.

We’ve been covering Earthquaker for a while now, and we’ve seen them explode into a huge name in guitar pedal manufacturing. It’s always cool to see what they’ll come up with next as they grow. For us here at TheTonKing.com, checking out The Cloven Hoof for 30 Pedals in 30 Days reminded us why Earthquaker has been able to secure their name in the world of pedals.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
