30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014: Baroni Lab Wall Era Distortion

While many companies chase tones from classic pedals, Baroni Lab chases tone from classic artists. With this unique approach, they’ve come up with a whole line of pedals inspired by various eras of Pink Floyd. On today’s episode of 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, TheToneKing.com checks out the Wall Era Distortion.

For those of you who haven’t checked out our coverage of Baroni Lab, they’re an independent company out of Italy. Considering that’s The Tone King’s roots, he was definitely stoked to hear that something guitar related was coming from the home of his ancestors.

Baroni Lab has taken a unique approach to creating pedals: Follow the tone of the artist, not the pedal. And, they may be on to something. Their pedals definitely hearken back to the classic era with tones with an eye on the whole package instead of one tiny bit of it.

I mean, it wasn’t just the Dallas Arbiter Fuzz Face that got David Gilmour that unique sound on the album The Wall; it was the Fender Strat plugged into the Fuzz Face, into a Big Muff, into a whole bunch of other pedals, into a Hiwatt, into a preamp, and finally coming out of WEM Super Starfinder 200 cabs. Rather than focus on one part of the chain, Baroni Lab is taking the whole thing into account – within reason! – with the Wall Era Distortion.

When we here at TheToneKing.com plugged the Wall Era in, we were driven (get it!) to do our own versions of the classic tunes of the classic album from which this pedal is named. What we found was a thick wall of fuzz, with just enough richness without becoming too muddy. Because of the range of the controls, the Wall Era was more versatile than we expected. And, with the mid-boost, we were able to go beyond a simple fuzz tone and reach into some really heavy territory.

When we think of classic sounds do we think of pedals? Or, do we think of artists? Baroni Lab is betting on the latter. With an ear on the whole of these classic sounds, Baroni Lab is looking to recreate the tone of the artist and not the pedal. There aren’t many pedal companies that I can think of that are doing that. Who knows? Maybe next, Baroni Lab will come up with a whole line of pedals inspired by every iteration of Lynyrd Skynyrd or EVH. In the meantime, TheToneKing.com has enough to keep us busy during 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014 with the Baroni Lab Wall Era Distortion.
