Randy Rhoads vs. Zakk Wylde – Pedal Shoot-Out

Boys & Girls – Welcome back to another TTK Pedal Shoot-Out.  In celebration of 30 Pedals in 30 Day, today, we have a shoot-out that I thought any guitarist would be interested in …  We have the MXR Distortion+ Pedal as used by Randy Rhoads VERSUS the MXR Wylde Overdrive Pedal, as used by Zakk Wylde.  Click HERE to watch the video, or scroll down below.

Now, a few notes about this shoot-out … Randy Rhoads used to use Plexi style amps, which weren’t as high gain as the JCM800s that Zakk Wylde used.  Even though Randy’s amps were modified to give you gain, it was moderate at best compared to the gain of the more recent and modern day amps.  This may explain why Randy used a ‘Distortion’ pedal, whereas Zakk uses an ‘Overdrive’ pedal.  Anyway, you’ll get to hear both pedals over a CLEAN and a DIRTY Channel, so you can decide for yourself which you like best!  As always, I hope you enjoy the video!  AND, don’t forget to vote below!!

I must be fricken tone def, because I’m having a hard time hearing the difference…I don’t know. All 3 sound the same to me, only while engaging the pedals it seems that the volume goes up and it gets more fuzzy sounding…only my opinion! but I’ll say..(to my ears) while playing with my band, I don’t wanna sound too bassy, that’s the bass players job, so I’d have to go with the RR distortion pedal, it appears to have more clarity and bite!

for me it only really comes down to zakk or rhandy,

    zakks solos rock hard
    Rhandys rythm pieces kick ass,
    both have there strong points.

+ i have not heard eaither live except what iv seen on videos an dvds ect an (from live stuff iv seen) i like the way rhandy plays the same version, zakk seems hell bent on turning every note into a pinch harmonic. im no stranger to pinch fever myself but sometimes its jus too much

as a distortion pedal they are both weak. but with a overdriven amp the zakk is better. but then again thats what it was designed for.

    Best guitarist:
    BRAD GILLIS:
To any doubters take any live ozzy album and compare to SPEAK OF THE DEVIL. Was way better than randy, just listen to it and compare before you vote. Most of you out there have never even heard the album. His sound and technique destroys the others. He was way ahead of everyone else back then, even randy. But bottom line, gotta love them all regardless.

Again, totally enjoy all the Tone King Info! All of Ozzie’s Guys are incredible. Blizzard Diary and Bark at the Moon were flippin great. Great Stuff TK!!!!!

  6. MusicMan says:

I personally like the MXR+ better, but that being said the ZW overdrive is for a more modern higher gain amp. I’m pretty sure that Zakk has more gain without the overdrive than Randy had with the MXR+ and the Modded Plexi. Plus, even though TTK did his best to give a basic overall of each pedals basic sound, the guitar had passive not active pickups. I think the sound was closer to RRs’ sound than to ZWs’ sound. Still a great shoot out and a chance to hear some pedals side by side without the Gumby at the music store looking over your shoulder telling you that you are too loud or trying to tell ya houw to adjust the knobs. Great Job TTK maybe try a EMG equipped guitar with the same set up as a part 2. Then we could hear a better side by side. Metals Horns to ya!!

  7. Greg white says:

RR/Distorition plus sounded best to my ears.

  8. George says:

I think the distortion + has the crunch that is the sound of true vintage Ozzy, as I also think that Randy is the best guitarist that has played with Ozzy as his sound and style really accounted for what Ozzy was all about, does that make any sense?

  9. Nathan says:

I think the original mxr plus sounded a little cleaner / louder , I don’t know . favourite guitar player was John Holmes … oh wait that’s a differnt guy,or was it Joe ?just kidding , definately Randy is my favourite, this is where it gets hard , I started playing guitar during the Jake E Lee era, but I also love Tony Iommi and Zakk for different reasons, I can’t say nothing bad about Brad , I actually like the Speak of the Devil album, and I have a bootleg dvd of Brad with Ozzy and he seemed to pull it off for the short time he was with him,not sure about Gus yet, I still wish Ozzy would have brought Jake back ” The Bark at the Moon again Tour ” now that would be cool !

  10. Just wanted to list my favorite Ozzy guitarist in order.

    1. Rhandy Rhoads – loved the live album
    2. Jake E. Lee – partly for his work in Badlands
barely edges out the others for me
    3. Tony Iommi – this is really a tie for me
    4. Zakk Wylde – both of these guys are great
    5. Gus G – i like what i’ve heard so far
    6. Brad Gillis – don’t care for him at all

I would be curious what others thought
