What Are You Doing With Your Gear? TTK checks out Goetic Circle and their new EP “Night of the Goatess”

By Marc Johnson for TheToneKing.com

Everyone knows that TheToneKing.com is all about gear, and so are its fans. Why else would you guys and gals keep coming back night after night unless it is to find out what’s new in the world of gear. So, we got to thinkin’, “What do fans of TheToneKing.com do with their gear?” And that brings us full circle to the band Goetic Circle, who have released their new EP “Night of the Goatess” to show all of us what they do with their gear!

Personally, I love old horror movies. After watching the 1979 “Dracula” with Frank Langella and the ever-amazing Donald Pleasence, I turned on my computer and went to give Goetic Circle’s “Night of the Goatess” a listen. And, right away, I got it!

On the YouTube video, the introduction of “Night of the Goatess” concludes with the line “…and now you come to know true terror.” And various groans and pants are suddenly swallowed up with a driving riff that’s reminiscent of Black Sabbath circa 1971. Muddy and dark, there’s so much gain on the guitar that you can hear a chime every time the pick hits the string. The old crunching riffs of John Christ from Danzig and “J” Yuenger from White Zombie also came to mind.

Horror put to music! But not to the point where it takes itself too seriously, Goetic Circle injects various bits of movie dialogue over its grinding riffs. “That’s blasphemy!” is yelled out right in the middle of “Night of the Goatess.” It’s a line from an old movie that definitely made me crack a smile since it seemed to be directed at the song itself.

Formed in 2007, Goetic Circle is influenced as much by old Hammer Horror, Psychadellic, and Euro-Trash movies as it is by bands such as Black Sabbath, Electric Wizard, Acid King, and Blood Ceremony. Other than its influences, Goetic Circle is somewhat of a mystery. There are no brooding glamour shots and no dominating front man to distract from the haunting and dark sounds that will sends chills down your spine.

Just like the old movies that inspire it, Goetic Circle’s music is meant to be fun. As they would say, “Old movie atmosphere set to doomy heavy metal music.” Just like 1979 Dracula with Frank Langella, you turn out all of the lights, turn up the sound, and enjoy getting a little scared.

At TheToneKing.com we know that there are plenty of you guys out there who, like Goetic Circle, are putting their gear to good use. So show us what you’ve got! If you want to tell us what you’re doing with your gear, let us know. Who knows? We might do a story on you and help show the rest of the world what you’re doing with your gear!

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
