I use D'Addario 9s and I usually change them after about two to three weeks. After that time the strings are still ok to use and it depends on how often you play them but I just love the sound and feel of fresh strings.I also enjoy the whole ritual of cleaning my guitar and changing the strings,I'm sure you and some of the other guys do too. It's an obsession thing lol.I also use string cleaner to prolong the brightness of the sound and I keep my guitar in my case when I'm not using it, that helps too.I don't remember this topic being brought up before.Good post firefighter.

I use my D'Addario 10s, but I have no brand loyalty to anyone.. These ones are just the best ones so far. As for duration? I keep them until they sound like dead leather or when I have to play for other people.

I noticed something that really surprised me,

I used ernie balls 9's which sounded great but became rusty pretty fast (I had to restring once in 2-3 weeks,i guess the climate here plays it role).

However, I changed to  ernie 10's now which are much more durable!! Such a little difference in gauge made pretty massive difference in durability…

You can try the coated strings which resist finger oils and the air elements a bit better than un-coated strings.

I use D'Addario 12-52's and change strings 1-2 times a month depending on how many gig's I'm playing.

I don't have a set time frame to hange strings, it typically depends on the frequency of use of a particular guitar's playing use. The more time played the more frequent I change it's strings. You can tell typically when it's time to change strings as they become dull anf lifeless sounding. Appearance from the oils and grit from your fingers are indicators as well.

Actually 2-3 weeks yoou mentioned isn't all that uncommon. Another good practice to get some more life out or your strings is to wipe them down each and every time after playing. If you leave the oil residue on from your hands, they'll breakndown the string's properties faster than if you remove that grit and oil from their surface.

+1 on what ESP noted. After I play, I use dunlop string cleaner to wipe down the strings.  Squeeze some in a cotton cloth, pinch the strings w/ the cleaner, and run it up / down each string.  I swear … you'll get a lotta more life on your strings!!  It's the oil in your fingers that break down strings.

I don't use the dunlop cloth, but I do wipe the strings, I think otherwise I would find myself restringing twice a week. As far as I know rusty strings also wear down the frets much faster, because the rust acts as sandpaper every time you bend or do a vibrato.

I think having one of the noted cleaners in combination with a cloth does a better job of removing the oils than a cloth alone. Otherwise it's probably just spreading the oils up and down the strings.

I've just started using Planet waves version of fast fret let you know how it turns out. Im runing it up and down every other time I play. See how much Life I gain to how much it costs. Compared to buying new strings

I must of entered a time warp, or there are more than one threads on this topic.

The solution posted elsewhere too apparently:
