When TheToneKing.com was deciding what pedals to look at for 30 Pedals in 30 Days, there was one pedal that we knew we had to check out: The pedal that can do everything. Eventide’s H9 Harmonizer Effects Processor.

Eventide’s stompbox effects have always been more in-depth, versatile, and extensive than just about any pedal out there. The hardest thing about Eventide’s series of stompboxes was choosing which ones to get. Now, Eventide has made that choice a little easier for players with the H9 Harmonizer Effects Processor. Including effects from all of Eventide’s stompboxes, the H9 is the all-in-one package. And, so much more.

It’s hard to call Eventide’s pedals “stompboxes” because they act more like rack units. The number of parameters of each effect that can be manipulated in each unit is truly mind-boggling. They just happen to be on the floor. The H9 takes that thinking to the next level, by integrating it with your computer.

Even though players are can edit the presets on the H9 using its simple onboard controls, players can also use their Mac, PC, or any iOS system to edit just about every parameter of each effect algorithm. The coolest part? It’s all hooked up via Bluetooth and requires no wires between the H9 and your computer.

Editing presets during performance is usually unheard of. Players have enough to worry about playing in front of bottle-throwing drunken fans to try and bend down to dick around with their pedals. With the H9, you can make all of your changes with your phone, in real time, while dodging those flying bottles. These also open up the possibilities for performances that were, until this point, unheard of. With the editing software, you can select multiple parameters to change simultaneously with the simple stroke of your finger. In essence, you can create unique sounds and effects all live during performance!

From Eventide’s line of stompboxes, the H9 already comes loaded with 4 Choruses and 2 Tremolos from the ModFactor, 3 effects from the PitchFactor, 2 Delays from the TimeFactor, and 2 effects from Space. Plus, an H9 exclusive, the UltraTap is included, giving players up to 64 delay taps at their command.

If those aren’t enough, players can also buy individual algorithms through H9’s Control app. Essentially, this opens the door for players to have every effect from the entire Eventide stompbox line, fully editable and controllable. The interface on H9’s Control App is easy to use, intuitive, and extensive. Just about every parameter can easily be manipulated in each algorithm.

Besides for live application, the H9 is a producer’s dream. Previously, you would need to have racks of delays, reverbs, choruses, and harmonizers on hand for recording. Eventide’s H9 puts all of those sounds into one pedal.

Keep in mind that we’re talking about a pedal that has all of these effects and options. Players don’t need to plug into a computer and cringe at the tortured tones of “amp modelers” that try and replicate the sound of their favorite heads and cabinets just to get all of these effects. Players plug into the H9, the H9 plugs into their favorite head (or heads if running stereo), and their favorite head(s) plugs into their favorite stack(s). No amp modelers. Just studio quality effects pumped through your favorite rig.

The H9 also features stereo audio in and outs. Which, if you don’t try, you’re freaking insane. The only way to feel the true depths of Eventide’s effects is to hear what they sound like in stereo. Also featured is a MIDI in/out, and Auxiliary Switch inputs

There is no video or article in the world that is going to be able to fully explain the capabilities of the H9. In fact, I’m not sure there are any players who will be able to fully utilize everything that this pedal is capable of. There’s just so much that can be done, the possibilities truly seem endless. And, really, that’s the only way to give players the ability to find their own unique tone. Not only can the H9 do everything, it gives players everything and let’s them decide what to do with it.

Eventide’s been on the cutting edge of top-shelf effect technology for 40 years. The H9 Harmonizer Effects Processor is more than the next step in Eventide’s evolution: It’s a giant leap forward in the integration of effects into live and recording performances. We here at TheToneKing.com knew we had to check it out for 30 Pedals in 30 Days, and we weren’t disappointed.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
