Some loopers are a mystery. They’re like black holes, or sasquatches, or how Iron Maiden continues to kick all sorts of ass after all these years. And the players that master them tend to be conceited pricks about it when they see you fumbling with the dials and buttons. Well, BOSS has come to the rescue for those of us who don’t have a Ph.D. in quantum mechanics and built a looper that so easy to use that the instructions are on the face of the freaking pedal. Intuitive. I know plenty of people who use that word but have no idea what it means. If something takes you a week and a half to figure the frack out, it’s not intuitive. Hell, if you can’t sit your ass down, and play the bastard out of the box, then it’s not intuitive. You know what is intuitive, a pedal that I can take one look at and know how it works. The BOSS RC-1 manages to do exactly that.
BOSS has been on the frontlines of looper tech since 2001. Their RC-20 is one of the staple loopers for many of rock, blues, and jazz artists. Of course, it would’ve been easy for them to leave it at that. But, BOSS wanted to come up with an even more easy to use pedal.
The RC-1 is about as straightforward as it gets. Up to 12 minutes of stereo recording time give you plenty of room to find your groove. And, the stereo in/out jacks can be used with stereo effects and amps. They also can be used to connect other stereo instruments like keyboard or synth. It also works with an external footswitch if you’re planning on making this part of an even bigger rig.
Probably the coolest feature, is the giant 24-segment LED visual ring on the face. Like a clock reminding you that you’d better get hell out of here because the chick sleeping next to you is going to wake up for work at any minute, the visual ring shows the full loop so you never have to count measures to stay in time with yourself—which is good because most of us don’t do that anyway. So, you might say that the BOSS RC-1 makes it easy for you to play with yourself.

I know I might sound like a broken record—Ha! Get it?—but BOSS has really tapped (yep, I’m doing it again) into something cool with the RC-1 looper. Many loopers get so lost in all of their functions that they forget that sometimes all players are looking for is a way to jam over a couple of killer riffs. So, if you’re stuck between let’s say a TC or the Loop Station, there’s no contest. The Loop Station is the way to go.
