Z.VEX EFFECTS creates probably some of the most eccentric pedals out there. When they create a fuzz pedal, you can bet that it’s going to be one of the best fuzz pedals that you’ve ever heard. But, you can also be rest assured that it’s going to knock you down like a heard of buffalo with something you haven’t heard before. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014, TheToneKing.com had a chance to get knocked over by the Z.VEX Fuzzolo Fuzz pedal.
Z.VEX EFFECTS is the brainchild of Zachary Vex. Some say that he’s eccentric and that eccentricity definitely comes through their pedals. Hand built and hand painted, each pedal is just as much a unique testament to Mr. Vex’s meticulousness as well as his wry sense of humor. I mean… “Hard On” That never gets old.
Named after a beast that could trample you to a bloody paste while casually strolling his way to a Fresca, the Fuzzolo is about as elegant as it is hard hitting. Simple to use with a wide variety of sounds from Sabbath to a bunch of weird shit that you ain’t ever heard before. Silicone fuzz with a ton of volume, Z.VEX’s Fuzzolo is derived from their popular Mastotron and Woolly Mammoth.
Besides for being the bastard child of a Mastotron and Woolly Mammoth love fest, the Fuzzolo accentuates its parents’ low end with aggressive mids.
More mids = More punch!
Besides for the footswitch, the Fuzzolo incorporates a Volume knob and a PW (Pulse Width) knob. Sweeping between a square wave and a narrow/wide pulse shape creates a huge variety of fuzz sounds for players to dial in to. As you increase the pulse width, the signal will start to gate, creating a choppy effect.
Looking under the hood, or more accurately pulling open the back, will reveal a P/A jumper to select between a passive or active pickup configuration.
And that’s it!
Not a lot of bells and whistles. But when you have a fuzz that’s as hard hitting and dynamic as the Fuzzolo, you don’t need to dress it up. The Fuzzolo does fuzz and it does fuzz well. Enough said.
