We’ve checked out plenty of Maxon gear.

We’ve checked out the OD808X.

But, you know what?

Sometimes, a pedal is so good that it deserves a second look.

From the guys that built the number 1 overdrive pedal of all time, comes the OD808X. And from the guys who gave you the number 1 gear site on the web, TheToneKing.com, here’s another look at one of Maxon’s most brutal pedals for 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014.

For those who don’t know their history, Maxon was the company that was commissioned to build the original Tube Screamer pedal. And, we all know how that turned out. What do you do when you build the most popular Overdrive in the history of the world?

You build some more.

The OD808X takes overdrive to the next level by giving players more gain, more control, and some of the most brutal tones that you have ever heard. When The Tone King previewed it for 30 Pedals in 30 Days, he didn’t even have to dial it in. He was perfectly content rocking out on it the way that it set. Most pedals take plenty of dicking around to get that killer sound. Maxon’s OD808X rocked right out of the box.

What’s that?

Think we should’ve tweaked it a bit more in the vid?

Well, when you get your own YouTube channel and spit out vids to thousands of subscribers, then you can tweak your knobs however you want.

This pedal has attitude, and sometimes that attitude is contagious.

That’s because the OD808X is all about balls-to-the-wall overdrive. Sharing the basic circuit architecture as the OD808, the OD808X moves beyond its predecessor by offering more output and increased hi-frequency response.

The pedal controls are easy to manage. Drive, Level and Tone. But, easy to manage doesn’t mean simple. The controls are more responsive than the previous incarnation, creating a larger spectrum of overdrive sounds. The controls also seem to play off of each other. A change in Drive isn’t just an increase in gain; it’s a dynamic shift in character. Balls-to-the-wall and dynamic tone all in the same pedal.

Building the most popular overdrive pedal in the history of the universe wasn’t enough for Maxon: They kept going. In the process, the OD808 proved that Maxon could even improve on their own original design. With the OD808X, they’ve done it again with their most extreme overdrive pedal yet. The Maxon OD808X was a blistering addition to TheToneKing.com’s 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2014 lineup.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
