P.o.B Pedals – Burnt Toast & M.T.F (Mighty Tiny Fuzz)

Pedals by P.o.B (Pedals of Babylon): Burnt Toast & the Mighty Tiny Fuzz

You’ve probably never heard of P.o.B Pedals. But, if the sound of the Mighty Tiny Fuzz and the Burnt Toast Overdrive are any indication, you’ll be hearing a lot more from them. TheToneKing.com is always on the look out for new stuff, and P.o.B’s carefully crafted pedals have definitely shown us something new. For 30 Pedals in 30 Days, we had a chance to check out the Mighty Tiny Fuzz and the Burnt Toast Overdrive and got to see what new tricks they had up their sleeve.

Sargon Beblis started P.o.B pedals four years ago after players started to notice that he was on to something. “In the beginning it was just a hobby, building and tinkering with pedals and amp… till everyone started telling me to make it public.” With a background in Mathematics and a minor in music, Sargon started taking courses in electronic engineering while doing hours of research and talking to other builders to get all the ins and outs of building pedals. All of his hard work seems to have paid off.

The Mighty Tiny Fuzz is probably the smallest Fuzz pedal you will ever see. At first glance you might say, “MTF, WTF?” But, don’t let size fool you. Some things are bigger on the inside. One knob, one switch, but a whole lotta tone. Running on a hand selected silicon transistor, the Mighty Tiny Fuzz is very dynamic and works well with the volume knob on the guitar. Turn down the volume for a clean with just a hint of bluesy dirt, or crank everything to ten to get full on fuzzy. Here at TTK, we noticed that the Mighty Tiny Fuzz also plays well with tube amps. The fuzz never gets hissy or grainy but also managed to push the tubes in our amp, almost like an overdrive.

Our favorite of the two, though, was the Burnt Toast Overdrive. Our first reaction when we plugged in the Burnt Toast Overdrive was, “Holy shit!” Well, we did crank the thing to eleven, but we were glad we did. When we cranked the Burnt Toast, it sounded like a cranked Marshall. Again, simple controls belie the beast that lurks beneath. A Volume, Tone, Gain, and Boost are all the controls that this pedal needs to give you massive tone. Pulling double duty, there’s also a toggle that will turn this Overdrive pedal into a fuzz box. Just like its little brother, the Burnt Toast works dynamically with the guitar’s volume knob and the amps preamp section to give players a wide range of different tones.

OK

If you haven’t checked out the unpacking video for these pedals you have to. Go now. I’ll wait.

Yeah. Did you see that?

The wiring inside of these pedals is immaculate. It looks like the gods of rock wired them from locks of Aphrodite’s hair. Neither the Burnt Toast or the Mighty Tiny Fuzz use printed circuit boards, and both of them, just like every other P.o.B pedal, uses silver for solder. Everything that P.o.B builds is hand-built, hand-wired, and uses the best components that are rigorously tested and matched to each specific pedal and circuit. Switchcraft jacks, Alpha pots, Teflon wire, and did I mention the silver solder?

To top it off, every pedal is fully customizable. Size, color, enclosure, knobs, color of the LED, and the location of the jacks are all up to the customer. Hell, if you like playing pedals with batteries that are a bit past their prime, P.o.B can install a sag knob to mimic a dying battery. The guys and girls at P.o.B also want to make sure that they do right by our planet. So, P.o.B is a GREEN company, and that means no batteries. The cherry on top? All P.o.B pedals come with a 5-year warranty.

TheToneKing.com is always on the look out for new blood. Sometimes, that’s where find guys taking the next step, coming up with something really cool. P.o.B might be new on the block, but their pedals sound like they’re seasoned vets. If the Mighty Tiny Fuzz and the Burnt Toast Overdrive are any indication, P.o.B will probably be around for a long time.

About the Author: Marc published his first novel Becoming in 2010. It’s a kick-ass book with monsters and dreams and stuff, and you should buy it. Since then, he’s written thousands of articles for TheToneKing.com, many of which have been picked up for circulation by manufacturers and other news outlets. His next book, Drugs and Pancakes, should be available early 2014 if his alcoholic editor can find time to work on it in-between destroying his liver and screaming about punctuation. He graduated from Roosevelt University with honors, which means that he’s not as dumb as he looks. He’s been playing guitar for over 25 years, which is almost twice as long as most of his students have been alive.
