Wampler Pedals has been cranking out some great sounding pedals inspired by classic tones for years now, and one of company founder Brian Wampler’s favorites is the original Plexi-Drive. Heck, they’ve already made one appearance in 30 Pedals in 30 Days 2015. From the name alone, you probably already know what kind of power lurks within. But Wampler has upped the Plexi-Drive’s game in some serious ways with the Plexi-Drive Deluxe British Overdrive.

The Marshall “Plexi” series of amps are some of the loudest, baddest, toughest sounding amps on the planet. They’re essentially the sound of classic rock ‘n roll. It’s “old technology” that is still revered today, and many pedal makers have incorporated the fat, bluesy, organic crunch into their own designs.

The Plexi-Drive Deluxe takes things one step further, however. Like the original Plexi-Drive, it covers all eras of the famed Plexi amp species. A new active, 3-band EQ helps dial in everything from the warm grind of the early Bluesbreakers to the brighter crunch of the later Plexi models, and switchable bass and treble boosts help achieve the rumbling low-end of a 4×12 or sharpen up inherently dark-sounding instruments for maximum flexibility.

But the game has been truly upped by Wampler’s addition of a switchable Pre-Gain control. In a nutshell, this control acts as a built-in overdrive. The Pre-Gain takes its inspiration from a famous, mid-voiced overdrive that has become a standard for pushing tubes until they scream (wink wink). This final touch is what makes the Plexi-Drive Deluxe so cool; it’s basically a classic rock ‘n roll guitar signal chain in one compact package.

As you can gather from TTK’s review, the Plexi-Drive Deluxe is right at home blasting the proto-metal, bluesy wails of Led Zeppelin. It’s enough to make you want to throw on a pair of dragon-adorned bell bottoms and sling your cherry Les Paul four inches below your knees. But the awesome feature set makes it more than just ZOSO in a box; if you yearn for a wide range of British-flavored burn, from thick, psychedelic sustain or even the brighter grind of the New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM), Wampler’s Plexi-Drive Deluxe will get you there.
